Order_Kiosk-Sandy's

These two images are a part of our recent Order Kiosk project completed for Interaction Design. The project was to create a hypothetical design for an Order Kiosk at Sandy's Restaurant located on Barton Springs road here in Austin Texas. The Project Forced me to think in terms of functionality and user-ability. Working in a group of four, I was able to collaborate in the design process in order to produce a working prototype that is aesthetically pleasing and very functional.

Capital Metro Redesign

This project was a departure from the format of any previous project. We were given the opportunity to choose the medium of our project, which was to design some sort of advertisement for the Capital Metro Rail system in Austin, TX. We were even given the option of working in a group, which I did. My partner,Andrew Jackson, and I decided that the best way to represent Capital Metro Rail was to create an animated video that uses humor to appeal to a younger generation of Austinites. Unfortunately, the video is too large to embed into this site. Please click the link below to view the video.

Concept Map

This poster is the product of weeks of brainstorming and planning. My concept map is centered around the S.E.T.I. organization, a group that focusses all of its attention to finding and communicating with extra terrestrial life in the universe. Each term in the spiral on the concept map is placed according to its physical association to the S. E. T. I. organization. The map also incorporates connecting terms that help the viewer gain an understanding of how and why the S.E.T.I. organization operates.

Field Guide

This field guide was created for this semesters junior studio class. The project was to choose a group of interest and to create a field guide containing 15-20 subjects. I chose to document the plants of Barton Creek (The Green Belt).

Diagram

This diagram poster was created for last semester's history of graphic design class. In the class, we were given the option of choosing some form of design to be dissected in some way. I chose to create a diagram poster of the american spirit metal pack of cigarettes. The poster gives information as to the branding and design influences of the product.

Bauhaus Presentation

Unfortunately this project will not be included in my portfolio. This is because the PowerPoint file that I created for the presentation is corrupted and unobtainable.

In The History of Graphic Design, each student was assigned a time period in graphic design history to present to the class. My time period was the Bauhaus era. Bauhaus design was centered around four different schools. Each school had slightly different approaches to design as each had a different head master. However, one common interest was upheld. This idea was that design should first be functional then beautiful. The following are a few images that were included in my presentation.

Locating_Place-east side book

This book in the result of nearly a month of planning and work. After being assigned a specific area of the east side of Austin, we were told as a class to visually capture the spirit of the area. This was first accomplished with our post card project then finalized by this book. My east side book attempts to symbolically illustrate the duality of the east side, which I found to be very important. As I walked down Caesar Chavez Street, I immediately noticed the brilliance and flash appeal of the area. However, upon closer inspection I found that the area was riddled with crime and poverty. My book uses the grungy imagery of the mechanics industry to represent the underbelly of the area, and bright prismatic pop-outs to represent the flash appeal of the area. To me this book is a testament to the pride and decadent spirit of the people of the east side of Austin.

Locating_Place-Animated Post Card

Using the post cards created for the east side of Austin, I developed this animation in Adobe Flash. The animation runs in a two part loop. To begin click the blue start image, and finish the loop by clicking the gold image.

Locating_Place -Post Cards

The east side of Austin is a beautiful place, laced with very colorful murals and advertisements and inhabited by an even more colorful group of people. With these post card I attempted to capture this beauty and spirit.

Found_Type

For this project I was given the task of creating a typeface using only unconventional materials. I chose to use newspaper, which I carefully folded in order to create a type system. The poster itself is themed according to the idea of memories being captured in the news. This project presented many technical problems that I was forced to circumvent in order to complete the project on time. However, I feel that I learned a great deal in the process of creation.

Activity_Booklet

This booklet was created for a program that is run in Austin area schools. The program seeks to teach elementary aged students about the fair trade organization that operates in ghana specifically with the trade of cocoa beans. The program accomplishes this by implementing a similarly fun and educational activity notebook.

Identity_Series

This series of images is the result of an identity series created last year in Graphic Design two. The project was to capture the identity of an assigned art movement in three images which were then made into stickers. My movement was the dada art movement.

Instructional_Design

This poster was designed to teach the viewer how to catch a catfish. My poster gives a step by step approach to catching catfish in a comical way. The first approach is to noodle the fish which involves shoving your arm down its throat, and wrestling it to the surface. The second approach is to hire a catfish assassin to do your bidding. Believe it or not there are people who still noodle catfish. I have even tried to preform this difficult task. However, once I saw a water snake swim into the hole I just had my hand in, I promised myself I would never do it again.

Kitchen_Of_Meaning

This poster is was designed as the result of our Kitchen of Meaning project. For the project we were each given a word. We then had to create a poster that advertised a hypothetical showing of the entire classes work. All of this in the spirit of our assigned word. My word was melange, which is a mixture or conglomeration of things. I tried to illustrate this in my poster with a wide range of color, and symbols.

Documentation

This assignment, entitled documentation, was completed for Image methodology. The assignment was to produce four compositions that independently documented e letter G in a unique way. This was one ef the first projects that required us to create compositions in photoshop that were derived from actual photography.

Critical_Mass

Using almost exclusively Photoshop, I completed this series of images in order to represent the first amendment to the united states constitution with a focus on the freedom of religion. This project represents the diversity of religion in america including cults, mysticism, christianity, and Buddhism.

Transformations

This series of pieces are a part of my transformations project. For the project students were asked to scan three items. In my case my grandfather's watch, an alligator's head, and a yo yo. After scanning the items I arranged the images in four interesting compositions using Photoshop.

Scavenger_Hunt

This photo project, completed for Image Methodology is entitled, Scavenger Hunt. The purpose of this project was to help us as students identify the formal elements of photography. This was accomplished as we created a six part series of digital photography. Each photograph is in some way linked to the adjacent photograph. This too is a revisited project. And don't worry about the man with the pistol. He's my father and he is as harmless as a fly.

Type_Specimen_Book

This booklet was my first In Design project at St. Edward's University. The project was to create a short type specimen book similar to the ones used by designers in order to market their typefaces. The booklet, was to encompass the spirit of the typeface being examined. I chose to present the Stone Sans type family.

Design_Culture_Now

This poster was created as an advertisement for a hypothetical design show taking place in New York City. This was my first poster project at St. Edward's University. Unfortunately this project was also lost last year along with my hard drive. I created this poster in order to replace the original. As I revisited this project, I kept a keen interest in a typographical hierarchy with particular emphasis to form. This poster was modeled after the psychedelic poster design of the nineteen sixties.

Prototype

This Typography 1 project was to create a six letter prototype alphabet using a 9x9 square. This prototype was created in order to supplement my original project that was lost last year.

Illustrator_Excercise

These images are the result of our illustrator exercises for Graphic Design 1. They represent my first brush with Adobe Illustrator. However, the eagle, the duck and my room were recently created in order to replace the originals that were lost last year when my hard-drive crashed unexpectedly.
